Help newbie network xp and nt

Hi all, I am a newbie at this and would therefore appreciate help in networking my windows xp desktop with my work nt notebook (i have admin rights).

 

I connected them to a linksys router, but each machine cannot see the other.

 

I pinged each machine (from the other) and I did receive a reply.

 

I have been scouring the forum here, but cannot seem to find a discussion on this topic.

Since you said you could ping both machines, it sounds like you just have a workgroup/domain problem. Since your NT box is a work box I would not mess with its settings but you could set your XP box to the same workgroup as your NT box. If you do not want to do that then just do a computer search on one box for the other. You can do this by right clicking on network neiborhood/my network places and click on search for computers.
