Do I need ACPI with XP?

Recommended Posts

Is ACPI really necessary under XP for a desktop setup. I have disabled all the power management features for my PC anyway. I never leave it running if I am not using it. My only concern is powering down the PC without using the power button on the front.

No but is is recommended. APM support is fading away and ACPI is the new power management king...unless of course your hardware does not support it. In 2K there was an option in power management to power down your PC when not using ACPI...dunno if it's still there in XP. Enable APM in your bios and check it out.

Is there any specific reason why you are choosing APM over ACPI? ACPI is preferable especially in today's computers with dozens of IRQ's.

I am having a problem with my CD writer and DVD drive taking forever to spin up when I insert a disk. I read somewhere this can be caused by ACPI powering down the drives too frequently. I dont know if this is the problem. It didnt happen until I installed XP. When using Win98 the drives always spun up as soon as i popped in a disk.

yep, checked that. Its set for DMA Mode 2 for the CD-R and Multi-Word mode 2 for the DVD drive.
