Appropriate Disk and Registry ACLs on 2000 Pro ??

Recommended Posts

In an attempt to increase security I want to replace any ACL entries on my disks and registry hives from 'Everyone' to 'Authenticated Users'.

However I'm sure this being windows... that this will have some nasty side affects..

Do any programs (Including Windows) require the 'Everyone' setting to be enabled in the Registry or on disk?

Hidee Hoo. Any time you tighten security or have anything at all something will be incompatible. Why not just back up your registry and system. Tighten security and see if everything you need to have working is still doing so. It's impossible to know exactly who, what, where, when, and why will and or won't work without being omnipotent. Perhaps someone can give you a better idea of what will happen, but the fact of the matter remains you'll never know what will happen in YOUR unique environment without just trying it.

Supposedly any non Windows 2000 compatible software may be incompatible with the "Everyone" setting removed. If it's 2000 compatible then theoretically the "Everyone" setting being removed will not affect the software. There is only one way to know for sure.
