IE6...Mozilla...Sun JRE...MS VM... What a mess!!

Recommended Posts

Ever since I installed Sun JRE for Windows and the QuickTime 6 Java plugin.. my browsers (IE 6 & Mozilla 1.1) have gone wonky.

For a start I couldn't use the MS JM for sites that needed it (even after I disabled and uninstalled both plugins). Eg on microsoft.com none of the animated side bars work and the text size is too big (no matter what I set it to).

I've tried repairing IE and then uninstalling it (down to IE 5.01, and re-installing 6). Java still doesn't work!!

now sites that use .gif files don't display properly (in IE they either appear as small versions of that 'cannot find server page' or the square with the little red x in the corner).

In Mozilla .gifs are just blank space or black boxes, and of course Java doesn't work because I uninstalled the Sun plugin (the reason this whole mess started was becasue I was trying to get Java support in Mozilla).

1. How on earth do I get IE and Mozilla working again (I've tried restoring some file type associations... enabling .gif animations and turning on VM in IE). Doesn't Work!

2. Assuming this thing is repairable I'm I ever going to see the day when IE 6 and MS VM can work alongside Mozilla and Sun JRE on the same PC happly and without conflicts?! ;(

I use Opera (which uses the JRE) and IE6 (which normally uses the MS VM) on the same PC without the two coming into conflict with each other...

The animated sidebar on microsoft.com is Javascript not Java (2 very different things). So it's quite possible that there is nothing wrong with the java VM.

As to what's causing your problem. I have absolutely no idea. Try resetting the IE security settings back to defaults (just in case you've accidentally disabled something important).
