I need help with Interstate 76 Gold Edition

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to get I'76 to run on WinXP. I'm sure someone has been able to get it to run. If you know how, please tell me.

I can get to the in-game menu, but selecting anything causes the game to crash. Compatibility mode does not seem to work and I have tried using the QFixApp, but with no success.

In your list of hardware you say "Crap floppy". Do you mean floppies suck in a global sense or does your specifically have problems reading disks? About six months ago I learned on my own and somewhat by accident how to clean floppies. I turned three broken 3.5 floppy drives into good as new. I just had to remove and then re-attach the upper casing and remove all the dust. Now all of those drives work flawlessly! I was thrilled when I found out. Now I don't have to buy a new floppy drive every 2 years. I also use the cleaning floppies as well to keep things dust free, but one should really do both if you want things to really work well.

Can anyone determine if this game works on Windows 2000 and list the service pack, and direct X version you used. If the game works on Windows 2000 then perhaps we could focus on what's different between the two and try to pinpoint a solution.

I have been trying to get Interstate 76 to work under WinXP for sometime and was finally successful. I was having the same problem that I have usually seen posted here (Game freezes when selecting a menu item). I disabled my sound card and it worked fine. I tried this fix on two machines (an IBM T20 labtop with a Crystal soundfusion onboard PCI sound device and an HP desktop system with a Soundblaster live 5.1 soundcard) and it worked for both. I haven't tried the newest drivers for my Soundblaster yet but I have a feeling it won't work.

Is there anyone out there who might be able to help figure out what in the Windows XP sound code is causing the problem.

thanks

Don't have the game but have you tried turning down Sound Acceleration?

Wow!! Thanks, that worked like a charm. I've been trying to get this game to work under Win2k and/or WinXP since I upgraded from 98 two and a half years ago. Thanks tons!!! laugh

MS needs to include that in their ACT. Sound Acceleration reduction is almost as common as D3D Acceleration reduction in fixing old Windows games. Who knows...mabye Longhorn will have it? laugh

Ok...I try the Install and (after turning the sound acceleration off) the install program doesn't find my CD rom at all! Bit odd seeing that its running off the damn thing.

Anybody have some advice!? I get the game installed, go to the menu and then when you click "start trip" it asks for the Play CD and freezes...

Hi,

I had the same problem as d_crome. I was able to get into the menu but when I tried to start the actual game it asked for disc 2 and wouldn't find it. The game didn't really freeze. I still could click cancel to get back to the menu. But clicking OK didn't do anything. So here's the solution that worked for me:

I changed the drive letter of my DVD-ROM drive. There was a gap between the last hard-disk and the DVD-ROM drive letter. Actually the letter between the two drives was used by Alcohol 120% to emulate a CD/DVD drive. I removed the emulated drive and changed the letter of my real DVD-ROM to this letter and now I'76 finds the Play CD and I can play. By the way, I'm playing the Gold Edition from the Arsenal pack in software rendering mode, I didn't have to tune down audio acceleration and I didn't use any compatibilty mode. Changing the drive letter to the first letter after the last hard disk was all I had to do. I'm using XP Professional with SP2 on an Athlon64. My sound card is a Creative Labs Audigy Player and my graphics chip a Radeon 9700.

I should mention that the game showed a few minor graphical glitches and did crash after a couple of minutes in the mission "Mondo Burger". The glitches didn't really bother me. I'll have to play more to see if the crash was just a random crash or if it's a recurring problem. Perhaps I'll have to shut off audio accelleration or use compatibility mode eventually.

Anyway, I'm really happy the game works at all. At first I didn't even expect it to install properly.

cheers

Ralf

I recently had I76 installed on XP and played through the game. It did crash randomly a small handfull of times, but then worked when restarted. I have an OEM bundled install, software only, that came with an STB video card. I patched it up upon install. IIRC I did not have to make any adjustments to the compatibility to get it to run (except see below)

I had one issue that I was unable to resolve: the AI controlled cars. Their wheels would rapidly jiggle from 100% left to 100% right, with their brake lights flashing. While they drove slower than normal and bounced around a little bit, they still followed their paths and did what they were supposed to do. Tried compatability adjustments.

The gameplay is still better than most games I have since played. They definately did NOT phone in the funk.

How do you install the game. When ever I try it says that the game will not run on this operating system.
