Hipshot 0 Posted November 7, 2002 Hi, Ive just instaled XP on my neighbours Compaq computer, the thing is that before I instaled XP the modem worked prefect, it was possible to connect and everything, now, even if all the information regarding passwords and connect numbers are correct the modem wont dail, it just gets the error 630 I think... Why is this like that, cause I had the same problem on my own computer, a computer Ive build my self with a totaly diffrent modem and in a totaly diffrent place in this contry, is there a XP problem with modems? (no, SP1 is not instaled yet) Thanks for _any_ help Share this post Link to post
BladeRunner 0 Posted November 7, 2002 Windows XP doesn't have a problem with modems at all. Rather it has a problem (as did Win2k) with certain devices that are simply not compatible. Have you checked on the official compatability list to make sure this modem is WinXP compatible? If you go along to Compaq's web site (all part of HP now) and enter the serial number I believe you get a list of downloads specifically for that machine, maybe a WinXP modem driver listed? If it's not a modem that came with the Compaq originally what make/model is it? Share this post Link to post
Christianb 8 Posted November 7, 2002 I presume that the modem is one that came with the system. Just an FYI Compaq has a long history of making low quality, unstable, and unsupported proprietary hardware. Consider yourself lucky if there are drivers for 1 OS beyond the time the machine was released. In summary if I were Rainman I'd studder and tell you Compaq sucks. -Christian Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted November 7, 2002 Christian, I am in total agreement... I used to work as a technician for a 3rd party company that supported Compaq. I would routinely have to tell clients that they 'could not' upgrade the OS on their laptops, as there were no drivers available (unless the os had them) for their proprietary hardware. If I were to buy a laptop, I would only get either a Toshiba, IBM, or maybe a Dell, but never an HP/Compaq. Share this post Link to post
Christianb 8 Posted November 7, 2002 I am curious about what sort of products we can expect from HP and Compaq. Will compaq get better or will HP become worse? -Christian Share this post Link to post
Hipshot 0 Posted November 8, 2002 Well, I know that compaq sucks known that for years now, to bad my neihbour dont get that well, Ill just use the restore disk and take the computer back a few years Share this post Link to post
Christianb 8 Posted November 8, 2002 Sorry HipShot, Although I gotta admit it's kind of funny, because taking it back a few years is exactly where it belongs. Compaqs don't swim well in unfamiliar waters. -Christian Share this post Link to post
pmistry 0 Posted November 8, 2002 Remember Packard Bell? Their computers were pretty crappy as well, especially the monitors (eye inducing pain here, even with high refresh rates). Share this post Link to post
Christianb 8 Posted November 8, 2002 Hi Pmistry, Yes I remember Packard Bell all too well. I had the second worst row in the Windows Consumer Hardware lab while at Microsoft: The Packard Bell isle. The only thing worse was the Compaq row, which our most senior tester hard from obvious reasons. The poor guy not only had the worst computers, but he also had the most by a significant margin. I had 26 computers and he had + or - 35 depending on what was working . It's okay though David was a dick head so maybe what goes around comes around after all . We were testing consumer upgrade scenarios from Win95, 95a, b, and c, and 98 to 98SE. -Christian Share this post Link to post
