Half Life trouble

Recommended Posts

I have Windows XP Pro installed on a PIII 700 Laptop, ATI M4 graphics card, I also have an old version (original of half life) which

will install no problem on my Win98 machine under FAT 32.

But when I try to run the install on my XP machine nothing

happens I run setup.exe and nothing happens the installer

does not even extract the files. My main partition is an

NTFS partition, but I have 600 MB Fat 32 partition as well

available. I tried copying the whole CD over to that

partition but no luck.

I also tried all varieties of the compatibility visard on

the setup file and nothing happens. I have no real

settings or tweaks on the machine (none of the 16 bit

tweaks are running i.e. 8.3 filenames etc.)

My Program files folder is on seperate partition and so is

Documents and Settings. Currently this is the only

program I have had problems with, I also run other older

games like Motorcross Madness, Combat Flight Sim, all of

them installed without any problems.

I am stuck so I am pleading for help as winter is setting

in and I need some Half Life action. I heard of people

setting up ram drives but I am not sure how to go about it.

Regards,

Johann

Hi,

i do not have the solution but at least i can tell you what it is not:

halflife installs fine on xp or w2k, but when you want to run it you must update to the current version of halflife, at the moment version 1.1.1.0

but for even not installing i think maybe the grafikcard could be a problem. what you could try is installing on some other xp machine, saving the registry during installation, copying the install of halflife from this other machine on cd and put it on your laptop and import the registry settings for halflife on your laptop.

There is no need to copy the registry.. Half-Life just copies fine without copying the registry.. only thing you have to do on the computer you copied half life to is to enter the serial again when you start!

hope this helps you..
