xp/xp/98se network problem

Recommended Posts

Like many here i have a network problem.

This is the slow xp network browsing problem.

I have found many suggestions and have fixed half my problems

The problem is I have the three computer in a network sharing a hub/router. the 98se machine is the server for some files and one

DOS based program.

The two XP machines are fast when I look throw Net Neighbourhood at the shared directores on the server (ie. mapped drives)

They have a few directories with 100mb worth of data files.

When everything was 98se it was fast to browse these directories throw the Programs that accessed these directories.

But since we have upgraded to XP workstations the browsing is really slow. (10 to 20) seconds just bring them up.

****** On the first XP pro machine *********

I tried all that i could find to fix this problem..

I removed the string in the registry ---local machine, software, microsoft, windows, exporer, etc and removed the D************** string

I went add added off the XP disk the Net beui protocol under the value added directory

I went and add in the TCP/IP protocol advanced and set enable the netbios.

AND probably a few other I cant remember. and

BINGO it finally works worked and everything is GOOD.

BUT i went and tried to add the same things to the other machine

and set it up exactly the same and NO GOOD.....

I then moved the files from the 98se machine to the SECOND XP machine and tried to access the files from the FIRST machine that now running great and it was slow again, But fast ot the 98se machine.
