Problem connecting to networked printers...

Recommended Posts

I've noticed something strange about installing printers in W2k: If I attach the printer to the W2K box, it installs and sets up just fine; if I attach that same printer to another computer on a network and try to connect to it, I get a browse box that is looking for an *.inf file instead of a box that lets me choose the correct driver. If I try to use the NT4 drivers that came with the printer, W2K will act like it's installing them but then it will give me an error. At first I thought it might just be my specific printer (HP Deskjet 660C), but this same thing happens no matter what printer I try to use (I've tried 4 different printer - all HP's). And I know that there are drivers for my printer in W2K, because when I tried installing the printer locally, it found it. Any ideas? If my rambling didn't make sense, I apologize. I'll reword my question if I need to.

After installing a printer, you then need to share it. When you do, NT or W2K will ask you which clients to support, and will put those drivers on the print server. Then when you conect from the client, the correct drivers are passed over the network and installed.

Failing that (if the server doesn't have drivers for the client), install the drivers for the printer manually, then change the properties to redirect it to the print server.

The printer is installed on a WinNT 4.0 Server. Under W2K, how would I redirect the printer from a LPT port to a networked printer? I'm not sure that I understand...

I know how to share a printer, etc, but I'm confused because W2K obviously has an embedded driver for this printer; Why isn't it using this driver when I connect to this printer over a network?
