SnapperOne 0 Posted December 15, 2002 Win2000Pro-Service Pack 3, PIII, 512M Ram. Installed a new 30G Drive C, keeping a second 13G drive ("G") for game installs. Drive "C" was formatted using the Win CD, Drive "G" was formatted using My Computer/Disk Manager. Both drives have been defragged. Both drive work properly with all other programs. Programs that have been installed on "C" since installation, but before attempting to install GoBack: MS-Office 2000 Pro, Norton AV 2003, HP scanjet utilities, HP Photosmart, HP Precisionscan, Logitech Mouseware, CD Creator 5, Outlook Express, and Window Washer, which was installed after the GoBack problem came up. All these programs, along with GoBack, were installed on the original Drive "C" with no problems. When I attempt to install GoBack on the new drive "C", the following error message pops up: "Setup is unable to create enough contiguous space on your hard drive for a GoBack history buffer of 3.187GB. This may be caused by active programs locking portions of the file space. Close all other programs, including those in the System Tray." For reference, Drive "C" is 95% unused; Drive "G", 99%. I have attempted to "End Process" all the running programs and processes I am allowed to terminate - no change. I have shut down, or prevented from loading all auto-start programs, including Norton's - no change. And, I have disconnected the PC from our LAN and the internet during the install - no change. I can't find a program(s) that is "......locking portions of the file space". Roxio has been of no help. And, at $35 per phone call, it's getting to where I can't afford to run the program, even though I really can't afford to not run the program......or a program like it. Any ideas on what's wrong and/or an alternate Win2000Pro-compliant program that does the same thing as GoBack would be a great help. SnapperOne Share this post Link to post
jimf43 0 Posted December 16, 2002 Have you tried unhooking your second drive while installing? Just a thought. Share this post Link to post
SnapperOne 0 Posted December 16, 2002 jimf43 - No, I haven't! Thought about it, but decided it would be a waste of time, since GoBack was originally installed on this PC with two drives already installed. Thanks for the thought (truth is your idea will probably work), but I'm just tired of crawling under the desk, disconnecting and reconnecting the PC, etc., etc.......so, I'll probably leave your idea as a last ditch effort. Thanks..........SnapperOne Share this post Link to post

Contiguous space..hmmm -Try defragging the drive and then reinstalling, failing that if you have any software (like Norton Sys Works) that "locks" it (Norton AV should be OK) try uninstalling it for now and see how it goes Share this post Link to post
SnapperOne 0 Posted December 17, 2002 Kaiser Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I defragged both HDs before trying the GoBack install again. Didn't help. With regard to utility-type programs, there were none installed on either HD when I rec'd the first "whoops message" from GoBack. If need be, I'll reformat drive "C" and "G" again and start from scratch. No response from GoBack (the company), so I can't think what else to do. As for GoBack as a program.........has saved my _ss enough times that I'm fighting to get it back on-line. As for GoBack (Roxio / Adaptec) as a company, while I have religiously suggested that people install GoBack on their PCs, from now on I guess I'll have to caution them that the company's customer service needs a bit of work. SnapperOne 0 Posted December 21, 2002 General message to all concerned - GoBack / Roxio is apparently having some difficulty with something within Win2000, Service Pack 3, or "?". After performing a "boot-time" defrag of both drives using DiskKeeper 7.X, I was finally able to install GoBack 3 Delux. It would not, however boot properly; rebooting, and rebooting continuously, on its own, without ever getting fully into Windows. GoBack is aware of the problem, asking that I forward something called a Pinfo.pxt and .nof file to them for review. SnapperOne Share this post Link to post
ghayes 0 Posted December 31, 2002 "Setup is unable to create enough contiguous space on your hard drive for a GoBack history buffer of 3.187GB" This means that the free space on the drive is fragmented and that GoBack isn't able to find enough contiguous free space to create its history file. You need to defrag with a disk defragmenter that does a good job of consoli[censored] free space (something that the built-in defragmenter really doesn't do a good job of doing). - Greg/Raxco Software Microsoft MVP - Windows Storage Management/File System Disclaimer: I work for Raxco Software, the maker of PerfectDisk - a commercial defrag utility, as a systems engineer in the support department.
