Medal of Honor and Cheapness

Anyone think Medal of Honor is cheap at times. Sometimes levels seem impossible to complete and you have to get lucky to survive with your 100 health. I was playing Spearhead and the part with the supply truck in the second mission is REALLY hard. Got 1 or 2 tanks shooting me, a sloppy driver, and about 5 guys on the ground machine gunning me and troops up on high rises use automatic guns on me. Yeah....

Don't worry about finishing levels with 100 health. As long as you're still alive, then that's all that counts smile

 

That level is pretty tough. I lost count of the number of times I had to play it to beat it. After a couple of goes you learn where the tanks and men are coming from so you can get the gun into position early and be ready for them.

 

Just hit the tanks in the turrets and they go down fairly quickly. You can also shoot out the tree house type things with the machine gunners on them.

 

Americas Army is fairly rubbish actually. I haven't played it for a while, but you have to go through the training levels, and they're mind numblingly boring. You have the shooting range, the obstacle course and so-on.

 

I'm sure it's realistic to a point, but it's supposed to be a game, and the word game implies fun. And there doesn't seem to be much of that in AA.

 

Still, for a freebie, what can you expect smile

Yeah I kinda said that wrong, I meant with only 100 health and never getting anymore health its tough to beat. I finally did manage to beat that jeep level. I had 1 health left when I finished it. It was pure luck too. To do it again though........

 

The snipers in the first game are beyond cheap. Sniper town is one tough level. Best way is take out 1 sniper and then save, and repeat.

Well Bursar, I guess you were never in the REAL military then. You have to go through training there too. But then a lot of Quake-heads won't like Army anyway, cause its NOT a bunny hopping frag fest. Its a team based STRATEGY "SIMULATOR". NOT a game, but a SIM - big difference. You see, this is what they are going to use in their real training as well. And I'd say that the only other SIM out there close to it is Ghost Recon. MOH is still based on Quake, and so its still more towards frag feasting, though at least a slight move towards a sim. Operation Flashpoint is ok, but it is so choppy and has some quirks to it.

I think Medal of Honor's use of the Quake 3 engine is a good choice, but the programming behind it seems poor. For example the game runs quite slowly on my PC, where as other Quake 3 engine games run much better. I can Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Outcast, SOF2, and Alice all at either 800x600 or 1024x768 with all details maxed out. No AA or AF. But with MOHAA, I can't even have it run very smoothly at 640x480 with 32-bit color, and medium details. It may have alot of good features but the team that developed it certainly has less expertise with the Q3 engine than the other folks did. But then again Rogue, Raven, and Gray Matter, all made other games off an id Software engine....

Nope. I've got absolutely no military experience what so ever. Ofcourse you have to go through training. Makes sense. No point sending soldiers off to do a risky job if they don't what they're doing once they get there.

Odd, it runs just fine on my PC (P4 1.6GHz 512MB RD-RAM, GF3) at 1280x1024 in 32bit.

There's a lot more going on in MOHAA. The AI whilst not top notch is constantly doing stuff, the explosions and debris are probably fairly intensive on CPU time as well.

It's just a pity that Speahead is so short. It also doesn't flow as well as the original game. In the original game you kind of moved from place to place, but the events hung together.

In Spearhead you are hoping about all over the place doing different things. I just got the impression that parts of it were done purely because of Band of Brothers. It's a fun game, but really isn't a patch on the original.

Given that the title is "Speahead Expansion pack: First Edition - Central Europe", I would expect there to be more packs that cover other events.

I seem to think MOHAA is more CPU dependant. When I had my Celeron I was lucky to get 20fps in 800x600x32 lower detail. With my XP 1700 I get 50fps+ in 800x600x32 high detail with the same old crappy GF2 MX200.
