Need help w/linksys & XP

Very frustrated.

 

Just added a Windows XP client to a Linksys router/wireless/access point network. I get it set up where all the clients (98, 2000, AND new XP machine) get connectivity to the router/gateway (ie. I can ping the gateway from all the clients). All clients receive their IP addresses from the DHCP etc.. "ipconfig" shows the right gateway/DNS server addresses.

 

I fire up Explorer 6.0, I get connectivity for a few minutes, then the connection drops. All the other 98 & 2000 clients work just fine. The XP client can't even ping the gateway.

 

Any idea what would cause the XP client to lose connectivity to the router? Keep in mind, it has connectivity at first, then it's gone. Is it in XP, IE6.0, router settings? I can reproduce this consistently.

Upgrade the firmware to the latest release... The uPnP feature, that Windows XP uses, is broken in all but the most current firmware. I assume that you have a BEFSR41?

I have the same situation on my Windows XP Home edition but the Windows 2000 works fine.

Do the following as that is what I was told by Linksys technician. I could not even download a file cause it would loose connection even though the PC is 2 feet away from router.

 

1) Uninstall the Wireless PCI utility and reboot.

2) Once XP recognises the wireless card, install only the driver and not the utility.

3) XP will ask to run the network wizard, cancel this process.

4) verify that the PCI card is not using the same IRQ as the Video or Sound Card. I was told that it can share other IRQs.

5) Also check the IRQ, it should be between 1-15.

6) Once this is done go to the device manager and click on the property tab of your wireless card and verify that the parameters match the settings on your router, WEP, Channel, Etc.

 

Let me know if this resolves the problem.

Also sounds like a problem based on the broken uPnP.

I am using BEFW11S4 V2 and PCI WMP11. How is the UnPn fixed ?.

Thanks to all who responded. Your postings led me down the path to investigate whether XP was having a problem with the adapter itself. Some sort of conflict, causing it to shutdown the adapter somehow. BTW, my adapter is an Orinoco USB adapter (not linksys).

 

I removed all the drivers, downloaded the latest FW (w/ new drivers), reinstalled the adapter. reset the router and voila, I'm up and running.

 

PS. I had the linksys BEFW11P1. Ver 7.66 latest FW from Proxim.
