IDE Cable Question

Recommended Posts

I have a removable drive bay in my computer, it's connected to the mainboard with a 80pin cable. But inside the cradle there is a 1 to 2 inch 40pin cable. My computer is running the device at UDMA Mode 5(ATA100) even tho there is a 40pin cable.

Would it be in my best intrest to buy a cradle that has an 80pin cable or just leave it. My instincts tell me it's a bad idea having a 40pin cable running ATA100.

IIRC the extra wires on the 80 wire cables are to prevent crosstalk and interference when running at the higher speeds.

It's entirely possible that you won't have these problems with such a short length of cable, and that's why there's only a 40 wire cable in the cradle.

If you have a spare 80 wire cable that you can cut up, then go for it, but I think you'll find it tricky to buy an IDE cable of that length.

it doesn't only happen in winxp upgrade, one of these days you'll restart your machine and get this BSOD.
