Hyperthreading under XP Pro

I've been having a problem with enabling hyperthreading in WinXP. My mobo picks up the processor as 2 3.06 GHz P4's, but XP treats it as one.

 

Any suggestions?

Yes, hyperthreading was enabled. XP doesn't even show me a processor tab under Device Manager.

what are u looking at when u say xp says it's one processor?

ive seen the no processor tab prob before on this forum. do some searching in this forum.

have u installed a benchmark proggy like sandra sisoft?

if u did what does it say?

 

is there such thing as xp pro for only one processor????

 

i been ht since the day it came out (over a year ago) and it was always seemless.

No, Task manager only shows one graph (one processor). No benchmarking programs are installed.

Then change the type of kernel you are using in Device Manager.

 

If its ACPI Uniprocessor or just ACPI change to ACPI Multiprocessor.

 

If you built your computer without power management, then select MPS Multiprocessor.

 

Go into device manager, expand the computer category, double click on the computer type listed, then click driver tab. click update driver, click next , click "show all hardware of this device class", then select the appropriate computer type, hit next and hit finish.

Yeah, I only see Standard PC in Device manager, and nothing I do (up[censored] the driver and picking a location) will find any other compatible drivers.

there is something wrong

even if u instal then activate ht it'll still read multi processors

works better when u do it right though.

ive installed mine many times and turned ht on and off and dont have probs.

 

did you install xp yourself?

what build is it?

did you install any raid/sata/scsi drivers using f6 at install

get any errors during install.

acpi on?

without being at home is cant remember any more right now.

Still won't work. Only a standard PC is available in Device Manager.

i thought i read somewhere about ht being tied to acpi

(in other words acpi needs to be turned on)

it was more implied by the article. im pretty sure it was a hyperthreading white paper from intel. but there is a lot to read and i havent found it yet

 

anyway for some reason i think it's the acpi.

i always have acpi on and i can activate and deactivate ht and the system updates when i boot.

Well, I played around with a bunch of settings, and here's what happened:

 

I repaired my copy of WinXP using the F5 (for the multiproc) and F6 (for the RAID).

 

This gave me Hyperthreading in XP, but my soundcard and usb had IRQ conflicts, so I turned off PNP OS, and let the BIOS take care of it. This fixed the soundcard and USB problems.

Windows NT, 2000, XP shold never have "Plug and play OS" set to yes.

Because in SOME cases, it gives control to the operating system to set up IRQs and what have you. ACPI is suppose to fix up most of the IRQ conflicts and what not, but once you enable "PNP OS Installed", you kind of defeat the purpose.

 

Let the BIOS assign the IRQs properly.

 

P.S.: I have it enabled right now with no problems, just because I wanted to see what it did and it changed nothing. However, I will most likely have that disabled on my A7N8X board when it arrives.

i have never not had that active

since win 98 anyway.

we dont want the bios and the os fighting over irqs

the os does just fine on it's own
