racingmars 0 Posted July 4, 2003 hi all, please could someone calrify something for me. i'm based in the UK, and use a basic 177k cable broadband connection. i want to connect a second PC, and have an old 10base-T hub, but the speed format confuses me (10mbps). how does this compare to the broadband connection? is it faster? slower? do i need to upgrade to a 100base hub? please help best wishes Share this post Link to post

You take 177 times 1024(number of bytes in a bit) times 8 (number of bits in a byte) and you get 1449984 bits per second. Now a 10mbps is 10 million bits per second. jmmijo 1 Posted July 4, 2003 The only thing you may notice however, is some packet collision. This is because a 10-T hub shares all the ports up to a max of 10Mbit. What this will cause is an occasional or even not so occasional sputter and/or slowness when connecting to some sites or even checking you email. It's not usually a bit deal as you can see that halving your bandwidth on the hub by 2 will give each machine 5Mbit to work with, still plenty of overhead to work with Be sure to keep the patch cable lengths to a minimum as this can add to further packet loss and slowdowns of course Share this post Link to post
