Freeware DVD Burning

I bought a OEM DVD burner that did not come with software. I assumed I could use the Nero that came with my CD-RW but the nero people are bastards and made it so it only works with that drive. Anyone know of a freeware dvd burning software? I only need it to burn data DVDs and not video (I am not sure if anything is different or not.)

They are even worse than that!

 

I had an asus and a liteon cdrw in the same PC, both came with nero. but neither included copy would support the other burner, EVEN with both in the PC!!

 

I emailed nero and they said too bad, buy ANOTHER liscence and it will support both. I was like what the hell, I already own 2, I only need 1 yet you expect me to buy a third???

 

They were not willing to do anything about it.

 

After trying to resolve it "properly" and being told too bad, you can guess how guilty I feel about using a keygen to create a code to use software I ALREADY OWN!!!

 

BTW Nero works fine for me creating dvd-data disks.

Yeah those are my thoughts exactly. I have used the trial version of nero to create dvds before but I am not going to pay the $50 for the license.

Have you guys instead of bashing nero try to get the

 

FREE updates from their web site that usually include MORE support for more burners?

 

i have a NEC anbd a pioneer dvd burner and both work JUST fine with nero.

 

 

Or does the "free" copy u got with your burner not allow u to get upgrades?

 

Trust me, the price of your burner would be the same whether they threw in nero or not.

 

I happen to love near over any other burning program due to what it can do that others ca not do so easily.

The free copies of Nero that come with burners are usually restricted to a single manufacturer. So, for instance, the license that came with my TDK burner will work with any TDK drive, but will not work with a Plextor, or Asus, etc. So in mervincm's case, he's got two licenses for two different manufacturers, but since it only accepts one license at a time, he can only use it for one burner.

Actually, I also bought a CD RW made by BenQ (Acer) and received a copyof Nero 5.5. I did attempt to install it on another computer of mine and got the same issue, that it will run only on the BenQ, However. I did notice that when I exited the auto run feature of the program and went back to my destop and used another method, it installed fine. What did I do? Simple, after the the auto run was closed out, I went into My computer and clicked on the drive the nero disk was in and I used the explore feature and found the main installation file for Nero 5.5 and opened it up and it installed just fine. It may be that if the auto play feature is used, that part of the software may check to see if it is being used on the intended drive. I can't say this will work for somebody else but it worked for me. The computer I used it on had an Asus E-616 DVD drive and it even isn't a CD burner. I just did it to see if I could get away with it and I did. So I had the last laugh on NeroSoft.

Well, yeah, it will let you install, but since you didn't have a burner, I bet you didn't get it to burn any cd's, huh...

 

It's not just the autoplay - when I go into "About" in Nero it says "Version: 5.5.10.35 TDK"...

Actually, the program functions fully but of course, I cannot burn a CD on A DVD burner but it will let me burn the image file to my hard drive for later burning if I get a CD burner for that computer. Using the auto play feature, the program would not even install on the computer because it did not have the BenQ CD RW on it. I now plugged in a generic CD burner and again, the program functions fully without any limits.

In addition, you also brought up an interesting point. I did a version check of my copy of Nero and it says version 5.5.7.1 bundled. So it may be that your version is coded to check your CD burner at the bios level. I'm not really sure but on my version, as long as I do not use the auto play feature and use the install.exe file on the disk, I can install and use it on any one of my computers, regardless if I have the intended CD burner or not.

Well it was a really good deal. I bought it for $120 if I remember correctly. I didn't realize that I couldn't use the Nero that came with my CDRW. I somewhat expect to be able to do it through XPs interface like I can with CDRs
