ASUS A7V8X mobo and Optorite 52/24/52 cd burner not working

ok I know both work fine seperatly, like the mobo in and my old cd writer, and the new cd writer in another computer, I tried everything to try to get this new one working. its not reading or writing any cd I put in, and the cd writer shows up fine in bios when booting up, its on secondary master, jumper set correctly, and its not working in eather win98 or Xp(duel boot) the new hardware thing shows up in xp and theres no errors, just nothing in the cdrom folder, and it 98 i gives me some kinda error, like cannot read disk or something. and the4 cd writer works perfect in another much older computer on mine it cant do a thing. but my old one works fine on mine, any ideas anyone?IM really about to pull my hair out! Thanks!

Did you try changing the ide cable. Try connecting it to the connector that is closer to the mobo connector (master). Try all combinations.
