Carolj 0 Posted September 5, 2003 Hi, My son's place of employment bought a bunch of Net Vista (IBM) computers. They had extra (these computers were originally supposed to go to some other company who backed out) ones so my son and I each bought one. They are running Windows 2000 Pro and hardly anything else was on them. We both installed Norton Antivirus 2003 and both have the same problem. It takes forever to connect to the internet (if we ever get on without giving up first) and then sometimes while we're on we get disconnected for no apparent reason. I'm wondering if these computers may have been configured somehow to be networked or something and that's causing the problem with Norton???? Hey, I'm a novice and I'm just fishing for answers. At first I thought it was the Windows 2000 Pro but my Mom's computer has Windows 2000 Pro and she runs Norton Antivirus 2003 without a problem. Sorry for the length of this but I'm trying to explain. Can someone please help me because this is driving me crazy. BTW, I communicated with a tech from Symantec and he couldn't figure it out. He told me to disable Auto Protect until I get online and then to enable it!!! (That still didn't work.) Thanks in advance for any help. Carol Share this post Link to post
adamvjackson 0 Posted September 5, 2003 How are you connecting to the internet? Dialup modem? Broadband? I suspect that when you connect NAV is immediately contacting the live update server(s) and trying to download updates, saturating your bandwidth. Share this post Link to post
Carolj 0 Posted September 5, 2003 Thanks for replying. We're both using dial-up connection. And I've tried disabling the auto-protect until I get online and it does no good. Carol Share this post Link to post
Sampson 0 Posted September 5, 2003 It isn't exactly clear from what you've said that this is a software issue. Were you able to log on to your provider easily before you put Norton's on your machine? Because you are using a dial-up modem, there may be an incompatibility between your modem and the modems of the providers. On the other hand, have you checked to see 1) if W2K is recognizing your modem or 2) how it is set in its configuration? Share this post Link to post
Carolj 0 Posted September 5, 2003 I'm sorry I forgot to mention. Yes, both our computers were working perfectly before installing the Norton antivirus. In fact, we've both been using them for several months without any antivirus installed. I know, I know, bad idea. Anyway, there was nothing at all wrong with the computer before the installation of Norton. Carol Share this post Link to post
Carolj 0 Posted September 5, 2003 Here's a new development. Last night my son was able to uninstall the Norton antivirus from his computer. At first by going through the uninstall selection on the Norton program. It said it was successfully uninstalled but when he kept having problems he looked in control panel and add/remove programs and found two more things from the antivirus (I remember one was the live update). Anyway he removed those and was able to get online to check email and surf. But now today, he can only get online and check the email - he can't go to any websites. Forgive me but I don't know exactly what is happening but I believe he gets the 'website not available' screen. Any thoughts? Thanks, Carol Share this post Link to post

Thanks, Carol Just a few thoughts....and forgive me if these are obvious questions. I assume you are using internet explorer. Are you certain that you are in online mode (File -> Work Offline is not checked)? You said that the email works... Do you have any other software (preferably Browsers) that connects to the internet that you can test? Also, what does the connection icon do in the system tray when you are trying to access the net? I assume 2000 has this. I know XP and 98 both do. Share this post Link to post

Sampson 0 Posted September 6, 2003 If it was working before you put Norton's on, this page from Symantec can tell you how to uninstall it. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606 I am not sure that it will take out the keys to the registry. You may have to hunt those down. Share this post Link to post
BladeRunner 0 Posted September 9, 2003 I'm certainly not convinced that it is Norton causing you any kind of problem. The absolute basic reason being that NAV does nothing to your internet connection. It monitors e-mail as it arrives (scanned) checks files as they are executed on your machine and watches for "bad scripts" from websites - it is in no way actually monitoring your Internet connection. As to the issue with not being able to connect to websites, thats a DNS issue of some description. Sounds like either your ISP is having DNS problems or TCP/IP may need reinstalling on the machines.
