Removing IE4 from NT4 ...(oh joy)

Ok I need an NT guru to help me out with this one...

 

I needed to use daemon-tools on my NT pc but the program requires the Windows Installer and certain (though unspecified files) from IE4+

 

I followed the faq's advice and installed the Windows Installer (1.1), then IE4 (Standard Install, no desktop integration) then rebooted and uninstalled IE4 and its componants from Add/Remove (according to the d-tools faq the nessary files required by the d-tools installer would be left behind by the IE4 uninstall process).

 

Too damn right! I don't know how many files have been added to my system directory (size increase of only a couple of megs not too bad) but my registry has increased from 3 to 5 megs in size. That might not sound much, but this is low RAM system, and a near double increase in registry size for componants that are supposed to have uninstalled is a bit much!!

 

So:

 

Does anyone here know what registry entries are added to a system as part of the IE install process? I know this is a long shot but I'm sure someone must have some idea... Also which files does D-Tools require? (so I can delete the excess junk, shouldn't be too hard to track files down it's the registry thats going to be tough to clean out!).

Windows NT4 Workstation SP6a (virtually clean install at this point)

 

IE4 (Original release, came off the 95_OSR2.5 cd) 'Standard Install' 'No Desktop Integration'

If you've uninstalled IE and the files were actually erased that would mean that the pointers in the registry would be invalid. You could then use something like jv16 powertools or System Mechanic to scan and remove the invalid registry entries. You could then use sysinternals registry defragmenter to help recompact your registry. The old jv16 is free; so is the registry defragmenter. System Mechanic is shareware.

I thought of trying a registry cleaner type program

 

the problem is that it isn't only invalid file entries that are left in the registry, but references to unistalled programs ie Outlook Express, and loads of unused file type associations and CLSIDs etc...

 

That's why I needed to know precisely *what* entries are made to the NT registry when IE4 is installed.

Right wish me luck I'm going to have to do it by hand... entry by entry file by file....

 

 

After all they said it couldn't be done with the Windows Installer but I managed it ok... looks like a 2 day job though!
