adding physical memory with different clockspeed

Recommended Posts

i have just bought a new computer, and the computer get a 256 ddr ram with pc2700 series.i am thinking to add another 512 mb ddr ram to make my machine faster since i usualy run lot of applications simultaneously.but is it possible if i add another 512 ddr ram with clockspeed 400mhz(pc3200 series) , or probably 512 ddr ram with higher clockspeed , or i must add a ddram with same clockspeed ?since one of my friend told me that,if i add another ddram with different clockspeed there will be a problem.i just need some advise from u guys.

in my case my motherboard support up to 3gb ddram(400 mhz) and i have another 2 free slot for my ram

cheers

Without knowing the specific motherboard, in general, Sapiens74 is correct. Some the Canterwood and Springdale boards, however, do have memory issues. The point is, since you are speaking about "faster", does this mean that you also may intend to overclock your board? If it does, you would be better served to remove the stick of slower memory altogether and use your faster memory.

The clockspeeds that you see on memory specs are not the speed that they must run at. Rather, it is a rating for the maximum speed that the part is guaranteed to function properly. Often they can even be run faster than the spec - thus the success of overclocking.

I'm running two 512 DDR333 at DDR266 without any problems, so speed shouldn't be a problem. I've also heard of incompatiblility between different ram manufacturers. I'd recommend tho check the Memory Qualified Vendor List of your manufacturer (most of them have one).

Or buy a mached pair of corsair, crucial ... tested for dual channel operation. (Check the reviews before you buy) and sell the slower 256MB ram.

Do you have a mobo that supports dual channel operation?

(e.g i865 and i875 chipset...)

save your self possible head ache's and DO NOT mix various speeds of ram - i had WAY too many issues once when i mixed pc133 and pc100. - maybe now things are better or you dont work your system that hard.

also, if you mobo can not handle that speed of DDR - it is pointless - unless your over clock.

ddr is cheap, just buy 3 256's or something of the sadme DDR speed

pc2100 / pc2700 / pc3200 / pc3500 / pc4000 and ithinknow upto like pc4500 or something insane.
