symantec 8.1 corp problem

i had a good working setup with symantec 8.1 on win2k3 rc2. Clients are various windows varieties with various versions of symantec corp either 8.0 or 8.1

 

this was working great i would download the update on the server and all clients would have it almost instantly.

 

now i reformat server to put win2k3 final on it cause it had RC2 on it b4.

 

name the server the same damn thing it was before so the client could connnect. and all of them do find the server but no updates are beening sent out over the network. I reintstalled the client on my workstation which made things even worse caues now i have really old defininitions.

 

on the server in system center i can see the clients and what defs they have it even knows that my workstation has old defs. It just doesn't do a damn thing about it.

From the symantec knowledgebase:

 

If the parent server is Windows NT/2000/XP, then copy the Grc.dat file from the VPHOME shared folder on the parent server. By default, the shared folder points to <OS drive>:\Program Files\SAV on the parent server.

 

For Windows 2000 or XP clients, the Grc.dat file must be copied to the following folder:

<OS Drive>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5

 

You also want to be sure you designated your server as the parent server.

 

Hope this helps. I just learned more than I ever wanted to know about Corporate Edition due to a faulty installation on the server (NT4.0 SP6).

 

Clients are happy, server is still marginal.

i copied the grc.dat from the server to my workstation and it made all of them work. Don't quite get that but all of them are up[censored] perfectly now.

The GRC.dat file acts as a "pointer" to the server. This way you can change servers easily.

i wonder why i only had to copy the dat file to one client not all of them

hmmm, are you sure you installed the Client and not the Server on your station?

 

You can have a parent server, and then other servers that are members of the server group that your stations can look to instead of the parent server.

yea i have had it that way before

but now it is jut one server and it is primary

my workstation has only the client installed.

 

i don't really care now cause it is working

and i have lots of other work to do.
