How can I display the Floppy Volume Label in Explorer

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

I would really like to be able to see the floppy disk volume labels in Windows 2000's My Computer. Does anyone know whether or not that can be modified?

Thanks in Advance,

Hi DS3Circuit,

Yes it is a good question. This is one of those times where Microsoft tries to treat us as being stupider than we really are in the hopes of avoiding tech support calls. As if the floppy drive icon, floppy access noises, drive indicator lights, and the "A:\" letter designation weren't enough to indicate that the user is working with a bloody floppy disk smile. That usability "Feature" of masking the volume label is almost as "helpful" as hiding the file extensions for registered document types smile. However it occurred to me that one could use subclassing and write a program to fix the drive volume masking if they really wanted to. I am not at this time smart enough for the job, but somebody here might be, Alex? smile.

Cheers,

Is this on the local machine or the network? If it's the local machine the answer is no, but on the netowork it can be done but it has to be done the machine that's volume label you want to change.

Hi Corpernicus,

Regretably it's my own system I'm trying to work with. Oh well I'll just use my usual solution to these types of problems: blame Microsoft :x.
