Networking XP with 2000

Recommended Posts

I have used the default setup when installing XP to connect two different XP machines. They see each other and work flawlessly. However, when I try to access my Windows 2000 machine, it does not see it, nor will that machine see the other two XP machines. I have tried enabled Netbios over TCP/IP setting to no avail, so in short, what gives? Any recommendations on the best way to make all 3 work together seemlessly?

First off, is this in a domain or workgroup.

Are you using IP addresses on these machines.

Have you tried Remote desktop installed on the Window 2000 machines.

But you have to enable remote desktop on the XP machines.

Let me know if you need help.

Can the Win2k machine ping the XP machines and vice versa? If not, are the IP addresses configured right (eg if they're all within one hub/switch, they must all be within the same subnet; if not, the default gateway settings must be configured according to how your routers are set up)? If yes, but they're not seeing each other within Explorer or Network Places, try putting them within the same workgroup (or domain if there's a domain controller). If they're purely peer-to-peer (no domain controller), you'll need to give all the machines common usernames/passwords.
