WEP setup in WinXP networking

Recommended Posts

I configured a WEP key on my router. My 2 computers running WinXP (pre-SP1 plus all updates that don't have SP1 as a pre-req) have no problem connecting. But the computer that is running all the latest updates (SP1 + the rollup fixes, plus all other critical updates, etc), cannot connect. It doesn't seem to be accepting the key (13 character ASCII).

What can the problem be?

hi Peter,

Xp+ sp1 should work without problem , check wireless card drivers, r those updated, www.windowsupdate.com

Check Wireless One Configuration service is up, Which Access Points u r using, if wep keys are automatically getting provided (128 bit ), u just enter SSID of AP in wireless card & check ifit works for XP+ SP1, if u r using peap+ mschap v2,, use only Microsoft propritory PEAP supplicant, & do not enter cisco or other vendor supplicants,

That's my 1$

Thanks. I should have said I am using WinXP Zero configuration service. No other software. Everything works fine if I turn off WEP. But it doesn't work if WEP is enabled. So the network itself is fine.

I've got all updates, including the SP1 rollup, the Wireless rollup, the Security CD that Microsoft mailed out, plus all other critical fixes.

I am using a Buffalo router (WBR-G54) and Buffalo Adaptors (WLI-USB-G54). It doesn't automatically provide keys. I have to enter it in. I have tried Hex and Ascii keys.
