when i try to run winword or excel using wine i get error message that goes like this:

"winword has not been installed for the current users, please run the setup to install the appllication."

Yep! You have to install Office 2000, or whatever suite that you have first, just as you do in Windows. Are you trying to run the excel exe file it from a win 98 partition? There is a good howto at the following site;

were will it be installed in my linux partition or in the windows partition you c because i have a dual boot one is knoppix and the other is winXP, i already installed knoppix in my harddirive...

Yes, of course. You will be running Office in Linux, not Windows! You would need to install it, just as you would any other application.

 

The best way to do ths is to get Crossover Office from Codweavers. Office runs quite well, as does Internet Explorer.

 

But Crossover is not free. What it does do is take the pain out of assuring that the correct ddl files are present to run Microsift Office.

 

Wine creates (if installed correctly) it's own "c" drive (which is really a directory) within Linux.

 

In terms of games, Wine will run some games, like Warcraft 3.

It is possible to run apps in Wine using a Win 98 directory, but not XP. Wine can use Win 98 ddl files, but not those that are native to XP. When wine source is installed and you configure the setup, it will look for a valid Win 98 installation. Otherwise, you choose to run wine straight from Linux, which most will distros have Wine set to run as.

 

It also depends on if Wine is a binary install, or source install.

 

The other issue, of course, is if you have XP installed on an NTFS partition.

when i install acrobat reader 5.0 a get a dialog box where in i can choose where to install it but the path on where to save it gets me confusing. it has a default path of c:\Program Files\blablabla...

but when i try to save it in different path or partition i get error message, its something about write protection, i guess...

What version of Wine are you using, the one that came with your distro pre-installed? Which distro are you using?

 

You can't use the XP filesystem (change the install directory)to the XP filesystem), if it is NTFS. Wine generally has a "hidden" directory system, usually on you home directory, labeled /home/(name of the user directory)/.wine. You can see it by getting into the Konqueror file manager and choosing on the menu: View/hidden files.

 

If Wine is set up correctly, it creates a "fake" windows file scheme in your home directory, such as .wine/.../Program Files/...

 

If this fake windows directory is setup in your system, you should be able to see it.
