AidenVenis 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Hi there, i am ussing linux on my laptop since 9.0 and every time I installed Linux it is somehow turning off after a few minutes. My battery isn't empty at all so it couldn't be that. My laptop is an old Compaq Armada 1750. Almost everything works on it except for the sound which is also quit strange. I would like to know what I can do about the turning off and about the sound. My curret linux version is 9.1 Thank you for your help! Share this post Link to post
danleff 0 Posted May 21, 2004 The sound problem is not uncommon for these laptops, or for that matter many laptops. Could you post what exact distro that you are using and the current version. Also, the hardware may be an issue. How much memory is in the system? Processor speed? 366 mhz, correct? Share this post Link to post
AidenVenis 0 Posted May 23, 2004 Sorry but I found the problem already after I searched the log for it. It seems that he shutsdown becuase the cpu whas to hot (95 grads). Now I don't know how to fix that yet, have any idea's? Share this post Link to post

Unfortunately laptops are a lot more problematic. Make sure that everything is 'clean'. All vents should be free/clean and the fan should be working. Any heat sink and/or fan on the cpu should be in good shape and secure to the cpu. Laptops tend to run hot anyway, so, all this is super critical. Share this post Link to post
AidenVenis 0 Posted May 23, 2004 Thank you for that website! It is really usefull! As for the heat problem I know that they are very hot but 95 decrees? My father says that it almost imposible to heat that for up. As for the fan it works perfectly and only begins working if it thinks it needs to work. Windows did not restarded at all! So now I think it restarts becuase it did not got a good meeting or something like that. I mean 95 decrees (celcius), that is verry hot and I don't think that my laptop can get that hot becuase my legs would burn then! So can I work this out of the kernel by changing that maximum temperture or turn it off? It never broke becuase of overhitting so it most be something to do with wrong temperture meetings or some error in linux. Thanks for the help! Share this post Link to post
trondhuso 0 Posted January 20, 2005 Hi there, I had the same problem, but this little tip here seems to have fixed the problem. You need to download the BIOS Setup Utility from Compaq (You'll find it on the hp/compaq-site) and do the following: In System Features - System Management disable ACPI.
