matrix3000k 0 Posted May 21, 2004 ok i am having a little bit of a problem here. i installed ut 2003 successfully but starting the game is a problem. i have an ati video card and every time i start the game the splash screen comes up then in the terminial i get this error fcntl: Invalid argument fcntl: Invalid argument Xlib: extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0". OpenGL renderer relies on DXTC/S3TC support. History: Exiting due to error now i know there shouble be a patch for this but it does not help. i tried this command LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1 but i did not get anywhere. did anyone install ut 2003 in mandrake 10.0 or any other mandrake version and get ut 2003 to work that also have an ati video card?? i would appreaciate the help thanks everyone Share this post Link to post
TommyGunn 0 Posted May 21, 2004 I followed these instructions to get the ATI driver (a Sapphire 9800Pro) installed on my system: http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46624&highlight=ati I don't know if you have an NForce2 mobo or not, but it might work the same without the 'modprobe nvidia-agp' line. Unfortunately, I found that the drivers for ATI on linux are not all that great. For example, in Never Winter Nights, there is a strange 'sparkle' effect throughout the game. Very annoying. UT2004 seems to work ok except for the occasional unexpected crashing ;( . I switched to an NVidia FX5900 and it is quite a simple and stable setup. Hopefully the link will work better for you than it did for me. Share this post Link to post
Dapper Dan 0 Posted May 22, 2004 Take it from a long time Linux gamer. I've used both, and Nvidia is THE card to use. It is the least frustrating way to enjoy all Linux gaming and Windows games through Winex3. Share this post Link to post
iamroot 0 Posted May 24, 2004 Use nvidia. Thats all i can say. ATI doesn't support linux much. Share this post Link to post
danleff 0 Posted May 24, 2004 Or...try the solutions noted from the compatability section of this website. The author found the following solution for ATI drivers at the Linuxquestions site. Reference: http://www.linuxcompatible.org/cdetail11488.html Share this post Link to post
matrix3000k 0 Posted May 25, 2004 hey everyone i forgot to mention that this is a laptop that im tryin to get to work here. its not a desktop. there is nothing i can do dell like to use ati graphics....im an nvidia person myself. there should be some other way to get this to work. by the way i know its not a 3d problem cause i can play quake 3 and other 3d games just fine its only ut 2003 that i am having a problem with!!!! thanks again Share this post Link to post
danleff 0 Posted May 25, 2004 Looking futher into it, this appears to be an xfree86 and ati issue, as noted in this article. I assume this is the patch that you were referring to? The issue is further outlined in this one. To quote; "Q: I have a working, hardware accelerated OpenGL setup, but when I try to run the game, I get a message on the console and in my logs that says something like "OpenGL renderer relies on DXTC/S3TC support". A: Your drivers do not support the "GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc" extension. This is needed to play the game. THIS IS NOT A UT2003 BUG. Currently, the only working drivers we are aware of that support this extension on Linux are the official Nvidia binary-only drivers. We are currently exploring options with other driver vendors, and we are willing to cooperate with any driver vendor that wants to support ut2003. The bottom line, however, is this: if you want to play the game right now, you should pop an Nvidia card into your machine." But there has to be a solution by now! Like you said, you can't just pop in a nvidia card into the laptop. Share this post Link to post
