Suse basic install question

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am guessing you can help me with this one as I am a blantent new guy to the linux world having only run basic installs of RH.

I have decided to sit down and really delve into linux and wanted to try the Suse distro for a change of pace. Unfortunatley I cant get the boot CD to work. I have downloaded the boot.iso file and burned it to a CD. When trying to boot from this CD I get the standared no OS found.

I am at a bit of a loss and in unfamiliar territory I think I have followed all the directions from the site properly but any insite would be great.

Thank you all, try to be gentle with me smile.

You're probably just makeing a data cd instead of a bootable one. What program are you using to burn the image. Creating a bootable image depends heavily on which program you're using. What program are youu using to burn the image?

I have done some more reading and that is exactally correct from what I am seeing. I am downloading the image using a Dell Laptop with windows XP home and just copying the files straight over. I have been reading some obout writing the actual iso over instead of just the data file but to be honest it is making little sense.

Apparently a year of technical managment rather than technical work has made me lose my edge smile.

Anyone have a good how-to for writing the file properly?

you can download a test version of nero burning rom for windows here:

http://www.nero.com/en/631939541422774.php

Then do this to burn it correctly(instruction from Gentoo.org):

With Nero Burning ROM, select File, Burn CD image. Set the type of file to *.* and select the ISO file. Older versions of Nero will tell you they don't recognize the format -- confirm here, it does recognize it but doesn't know it yet smile In the next dialog, set the following parameters:

* Type of image: Data Mode 1

* Block size: 2048 bytes

* File precursor and length of the image trailer: 0 bytes

* Scrambled: no

* Swapped: no

Now click on OK and then Burn (the CD-R)

Thank you Taeuler for your help. I will try this when I finally get out of the hole I call work smile

I am guessing this question is answered 30 times a day so also thank you for your not being too annoyed with it.

So while we are on the subject. Is this a common step in the installation process when you are not buying the software?

I was under the impression that the ISO files came ready to be loaded and were much larger than 23 megs which is what the SuSE files weigh in at.

Just curious on this one.

.

Is the boot cd all you downloaded and burned ? If so you don't

have an OS.The SUSE version I DL'd has 7 ISO's, each of which

is a full 700 meg CD when burned.I just used the boot CD to boot

SUSE after I installed. I didn't use it much though cause it

couldn't find my HP R60 scanner.

Apparently (and I speak with little experience on the matter) this is an ISO file that will allow you to get a NIC working and enough resources to install the software via their FTP site or a mirrored site. The instructions that I got from the SuSE site said that all that was needed was the boot.iso from the 9.1/boot folder to do this.I have some instructions I printed out from...well from a random website apparlently smile and taeuler's instructions to burn the ISO properly. With this I am hoping I can get this puppy to fire up tonight. 7 more minutes and I am home free...I love getting off work at 2 AM!

Ill let you know tomorrow how well I fair....wish me luck.

Welp it is now 5 AMish but I am proud to report I am posting this from an up and running SuSE box. It is running a tad slow but I have it on a very old box so that was expected. So far so good I must say.

After burning the ISO image properly things were a breeze and the YaST setup was pretty easy to follow. All in All the worst part of the whole thing was waiting for the download to complete from the FTP server. But 1.5 hours for well over a gig is not to shabby.

I would post more but I am dead tired!
