Suse FTP install in maddening!

Recommended Posts

I've been trying for a week to install Suse 9.0 via FTP and I'm getting literally nowhere! You have to load the correct modules for you NIC before you can start the installation via FTP. I've been through FOUR completely normal, working and common NIC's and I keep getting the error:

No network device found!

Please load a network module first!

I've used every SMC driver for my SMC card, the tulip driver for my Linksys card, Every D-link driver that will load, every Realtec driver for my Realtec and I still get this same error!

;(

Hopefully I'm just overlooking something because these are pretty dang common NIC's and modules do load for them! Any Suse person out there have any experience with this who can help me?

Thanks

Dapper

I assume that you get the quick text message when you load the module from the menu (or attempt to) that the module load was not successful?

Have you tried another slot on the PC to insert the card(s) to?

One not next to the AGP or an ISA slot on the system.

Thanks danleff.

This is a box I just got from an old friend and it still has Windows 98. The Linksys,SMC and Realtec all work under Windows, and the D-link begs for drivers. All of these NICs have at one time or another, given me great service under Linux with other distros.

I'll change slots anyway just to make sure.

Yes, that message comes up saying the modules were loaded successfully. Every time though, it asks for me to enter the cards parameters, but I don't know what those are so I leave it blank. The modules still load correctly though..

Yep, you should not have to load any special settings, just choose enter to pass through them. I would assume that there is no onboard NIC available on the board that you would have to disable to allow proper recognition of any add-on NIC in a PCI slot?

It would be interesting to see what happens with the Mepis live cd, whether the nic(s) are picked up or not.

I'm not sure if I can find my Mepis, but I'll try another Live cd, maybe Morphix and see if it see's the NIC. This has me baffled..
