A couple of Win2k Questions

Recommended Posts

I know that right now there is a lack of driver support and hopefully that will change very soon. That said, here is what I am having trouble with (who wants to wait?):

IBM Rapid Access Keyboard (Keyboard works but no function keys work)

AverTV/Phone TV Tuner doesn't work at all (actually locks up on boot when enabled)

Num Lock key sometimes enabled sometimes disabled

SBLive Value only works w/ front spkrs and no LiveWare (I've read about ways to get this to work but it seems much too tedious)

Can't get Com1 and my modem (Com3) to share an interrupt - in win98 this worked fine, I just couldn't use both at the same time (have a digital cam and palm hot-synch on com1), win2k will not allow this. Ne1 know if there is a way around this? (I really would like to fix this one right away)

Keep in mind you're Usining a beta version of windows NT 5 (2000) and it won't be out to the public til' Feb 17th, also why do you have a modem on com3? yea, i got a way to fix it, don't try to cram so much sh*t onto your computer's com ports and you should be fine, win98 was crap anyway, 6+ reboots a day

As I stated in my original post, I realize that Win2k hasn't been released yet. All I was wondering was if others had similar problems or helpful suggestions. That is what this board is for, isn't it?

I have my modem on com3 because I have a PalmIII and a digital camera that I connect to com1, and my UPS is connected on com2. I really do not understand your comment about "don't cram so much in to your computer." What is it for if I can't get it to do what I want or need it to? Isn't there a reason for pci/isa slots? Are they just for decoration or are they to be used to their fullest potential? While I agree that Win98 is crap, I was able to fill all of my slots (1 agp, 4 pci, 2 isa) and have everthing configured and working properly. All I would like is the same ability in win2k. I like that win98 allowed 2 legacy devices to share an interrupt as long as they were not in use at the same time. Win2k seems to not allow this whether in use or not.

The serial issue really comes down to what the OS regards as "at the same time". W2K is a LOT stricter about what it allows to go on.

Win9x users are mainly regarded as home users so the rules are relaxed (so they need to reboot every so often, BFD), where NT (W2K is NT5 after all) is used by businesses - and having to reboot 3 times a day and re-key lost data is not an option.

Swings and roundabouts....

Anyway, your options are fourfold...

1. Put the modem on COM2 (all on it's own) and have the UPS share IRQ with the Palm, etc.

2. Assign an IRQ to COM3 - don't share.

3. Get a PCI modem - PCI IRQs can be shared much more effectively.

4. Get a USB hub with serial + parallel ports - one IRQ for all the devices including the printer.

Yuppie, thanks for your suggestions.

1. I guess I could move the UPS to com 1 and just switch (I have a 4-way switch box) it to palm/cam when needed.

2. I wish I had an IRQ available!

3. Unfortunately, I don't have any PCI slots available. Besides, I really don't want a winmodem.

4. I like this idea. Do you know where I could get one of these USB/Parallel/Serial hubs and how much they cost? That might be the best solution.

Thanks again for your input.

A bit of clarification...

1. In the mobo BIOS for serial port 2, you should be able to change the settings to make it COM3, then adjust the modem to be COM2 - basically the same as you're current setup, but with the modem having an IRQ of it's own, and the "low-throughput" devices sharing.

2. Oh well...

3. 3Com/USR, Diamond and others make PCI modems that are NOT WinModems...shame about the slot though.

4. I've seen them in the junk-mail computer catalogues I keep getting, so I can't point to any one place. However, www.pricewatch.com is a good starting point - just put "USB", "HUB" and "Serial" in the search bar. There are also hubs that have PS2 mouse and keyboard sockets too. Also (just remembered) www.usb.org - search their products section for hubs.

Let us know what you decide (and how it works out)...
