Explorer Crashing

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a real weird problem with windows explorer: it crashes when trying to access some folders or do some tasks such as copy paste (even Drag and drop).

I initially thought that there might be a problem with the HDD's, run scandisk on all of them, nothing (no bad sectors found). Used O&Q Defrag, it defragged with no problems, but explorer still crashing. the system is stable when playing games, or video and music files (never a system freeze or crash).

Trying to open specific folders using explorer will cause it to crash, but accessing the same folder by other programs does nothing (Trying to open "music" folder in explorer, it crashes, but Winamp can open and play all the files). I can also access the exact same folders over LAN, and there are no problems.

Looking at all the symptoms, I’m convinced that this is not a hardware related issue. Any suggestions at this point are appreciated.

Thanks guys wink

Edit: please look at Server + toy at the bottom for hardware profile. It happens when trying to access any files on any of the hard drives (not just specific to the Raid or IDE HDD’s).

Hi

I have found more things to be wrong with the operating system!!! frown System restore tab is missing form System Properties, and I get wired errors when try to run it:

“The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application”. :x

I have no idea how this could have happen. I think that’s what causing the explorer to crash also. All other applications (even Internet Explorer) are working properly. There are no other problems what-so-ever (or at least I haven’t encountered one yet).

Any suggestions? Please!

;(

I had a problem with Explorer crashing due to spyware. If you don't already have something for it, run AdAware and Spybot S&D. Update the definitions and run full scans with both.

You might also try a chkdsk /f and see if you've got a problem with file corruption. Check your Event Log, look for any hardware problems.

I have the same problem... explorer.exe crashes and restarts when I open certain folders. So far its been folders containing mp3 files, album art and ini files - it doesn't crash when I open files containing just mp3 files though...?

I have XP with SP2. The details of the error message say a different file caused the restart almost every time - sometimes ntdll.dll, sometimes msvcrt.dll, sometimes shell32.dll, ole32.dll ....

Was a solution found to this problem?

Have you tried what the poster above suggested? If not, go get both of those programs mentioned. Both are free, and both work very well. Make sure you update them before scanning.

I found a solution on another forum (I forget where exactly) that works for my particular version of this problem.

I have adobe photoshop installed and by default it is setup to generate automatic previews of images. This apparently conflicts with explorer.exe trying to do the same thing and causes some folders (with images in them) to crash.

I just needed to switch off the automatic photoshop previews:

Right click on a photoshop image (one of the samples in the photoshop directories will do). You should then be able to find a check box to switch off automatic previews.

Since doing this explorer.exe hasn't crashed once.

I found similar problem in my system just recently after update the XP security patch. When open (left click) any folder that name contain "." character (for example a folder name as "a.b"), the explorer will crash. I have searched on web and cannot found a solution up till now.

Anyone found a solution ? Thanks !

I've had same prob for some time, on several directories containing bunches of small .pngs and other trivial raster types... always thought it was long path/file names (200char+)... certain CG progs would also crash on accessing these dirs... <<oh yeah,,w2k/p4/1g proc/.5g ram>>

and BPJ (posted 11.11.04), you hit it on the head.! made me register just to say that.!

I had exactly the same problem with My Music folder in XP Home Edition. It seemed that the crash was caused by the arrangement of icons in the folder. If the icons are arranged by artist or album, explorer will crash every time you open the media folder. In order to change this, right-click on the folder and select search. Don't write anything in the provided spaces, just click search. You will get a list of all the files contained within the folder. Now, right click anywhere on the page and select the 'arrange icons by name' option. Close the search window and open the media folder by double-clicking on it.

I hope this helps,

Seto.
