17mb of Bad sectors on drive replace?

Recommended Posts

I have a 120gb Maxtor drive and recently after a CD burn failed I checked the drive for bad sectors. Upon chkdsk completion the log displayed about 17mb in bad sectors. The other volumes are not displaying any bad sectors (yet). The price of HDs is not that much so it would not be a big hit to the wallet to replace it. Im just wondering if it would be wise to do it. I know as drives get worn they get more and more bad sectors, and the drive has a lot of reading/writing done to it.

So questions:

1. Is 17mb a lot of bad sectors?

2. Should I replace the drive?

3. What can I do to prevent more bad sectors?

Generally speaking, once a drive starts having bad sectors, it doesn't stop, but slowly dies. I would back up everything ASAP and replace the drive as soon as you can.

17MB seems quite high, yes.
