hungledink 0 Posted September 27, 2004 Hello, I am about to get a new pc. I have been able to obtain the Dell Dimension 8400, with all the optional extras, through my employers. This is a vast improvement on my existing system but what are peoples thoughts on the qulaity of the unit? The main thing I want to be able to do is transfer data off my existing hard drive onto the new one. I do not know if i will be able to install my existing hard drive in my new pc so are there any other ways to transfer the data, possibly via a usb connection. Thanks for any help. DS3Circuit 0 Posted September 28, 2004 Direct Cable Connection http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techenthusiast/tricks/networking/netconnectwiz.asp Network connections - if both PCs have NICs you could use a crossover cable with statically assigned IPs. If you have a SOHO network then just do file transfers. As you said, install the old hard drive temporarily into the new machine (watch jumper settings) Burn the files onto a cdr and move them that way. Use a 3rd party app such as http://www.eisenworld.com/file-transfer-between-computer.asp In the end, you just need a medium that is present on both machines to do the transfering. Since you said your previous machine is rather old, I would suggest trying to remove the HD first and placing it into the new machine. Then going with the USB/Firewire/Network transfers.
