command and conquer gold

i need some help running c&c gold. i can get the to the screen that asks you to select NOD or Gdi but i get a message that tells me "unable to read scenario" then i'm returned to the desktop. i'm running win xp. i tried running it in compatibility for win 95 but it still doesn't work. please help
