Linux_Man005 0 Posted November 22, 2004 Hi I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm trying to use SuSE Linux Live DVD 9.2 I downloaded it off there site and burnt it to a DVD+R so now I tried to put it in my CD-ROM drive but it doesn't accept DVD's made by my burner because they're + instead of - so then I just used my DVD Drive and whenever I put the DVD into the drive a screen would pop up showing what is on the disk (a .iso file of the SUSE Linux Live DVD) and when I try to click it, it says it cant run it because it's in a .iso format. So I tried looking in the instructions in the www.suse.com web site and it says to reboot your computer (which I'm guessing just means restart it) so I did and it just rebooted like normal and didnt even read my DVD, so I then tried extracting the file using WinISO but it didnt work. So I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me how to get this program started wheather its on the DVD or just on the hard drive. Remember im new to Linux so please be verrrry detailed. Thanks I really appreciate any help. Also, Just so u know I run windows XP home edition and I use a HP computer with a DVD+RW/CD-RW CD writer combo and a CD-ROM drive. Thanks again for any help Share this post Link to post
danleff 0 Posted November 22, 2004 This is one of the most common mistakes that folks make burning iso images. You do not burn it as a data file, rather, you burn an iso image. How to do so depends on what burning software that you are using. A good start is to look here. Burning an iso image should be done at a slow speed, not the fastest rate of the burner. It is usually good to burn them at 2X or 4X speed. Of course, this depends on the burner rating. You will need to burn the image correctly, then use your dvd drive to boot the image. Burning the iso as an image makes the dvd bootable, unlike just burning it as a data disk. Extracting the image will not work as well, as then burning the extracted files as data do not make the dvd disk bootable. Share this post Link to post
