Exchange 2003 on SBS.

Ok, we are getting ready to change the DNS settings so we can host our own exchange. Currently, we are using Intermedia.

 

I've set up the mailboxes to be replicated. Is there anything else I need to do specifically? Our local domain is connectky.local. Will this change once the DNS points to connectky.org, which is our real domain?

 

My main question is this? Should we be able to send email with our exchange server even before the DNS switch? I know we can't recieve mail, but I thought that sending mail was entirely different.

 

Any light you could shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

If the Active Directory domain is called connectky.local, then changing DNS will not change the Active Directory domain name.

 

You should be able to send mail fine, Your accounts will still be connectky.local unless you change the Recipient Policy to use the new domain ie connectky.org although you can set up a new Recipient Policy for connectky.org if you wish...

Yeah we can send and recieve mail within the organization already, but I can't seem to send to an external email account yet. Do you have any idea what problem I might have?

In Recipient policy check if your domain name is set as the Primary.

In the User menu go to "EMail Addresses" and set the external domain as Primary, uncheck the "Automatically update Email addresses based on recipient policy" or your return address will not be correct. Apply to all users one by one

Restart IIS with iisreset.

I have a similar issue. Over the holiday we installed a new copy of Windows 2003 and put Exchange 2003 on it. seems to run fine the server is the DC and the server also host the web site. My DC is company.local and this seems to be fine but I missed something in exchange because it allows me to send from the local client to an out side recipiant but the mail address shows up as "user@company.local" rather than "user@company.com". This is a useless reply address, but here is the kicker, I can send an email to "user@company.com " and it will get there.

 

Can anyone help me figure out what I missed? Thanks in advance.
