Windows XP Audio Problems

Hey all. About 2 weeks ago my computer crashed on me and I had to reformat everything and repartition the drives. One of these drives (D) won't reformat. It will start and then stop after about 10% is formatted. So now I have 4 drives, each with about 15 gigs, because I had to make other drives for my memory. D: won't really format no matter how much memory is in it. So that's problem 1. After all that got done, I got Windows XP Pro up and running. Everything runs fine, except I have no sound. It says in my hardware that I have the following things, Legacy Audio Drivers, Audio Codecs, Media Control Devices, Legacy Video Capture Devices, and Video Codecs. Under Volume and Audio however, it says I have no Audio Devices and no Playback Devices. I can't get anything to work, so any help is really appreciated. Especially since most everything I do with this computer revolves around sound. Thanks again.

I assume that when you say "D:" you mean it is a partition? i.e. a slice of one physical harddisk?

 

If it is a partition you could just delete it then recreate it maybe? If it is a physical disk I'd run it through scan disk or similar to check for bad sectors etc.

 

In the Device manager I have the same as you but also (in my case) "C-Media AC97 Audio Device". Something you can do in DM is to right click "sound, video and game controllers" and then "scan for hardware changes".

If nothing happens (nothing new detected), click View then "show hidden devices". You might see a new entry that is greyed out. If so, right click it and enable it.

 

Finally if all of that fails then its something to check out in your BIOS. As they are all different you'll have to look in your BIOS manual or have a hunt around yourself in there or refer to the vendor's website

I too al the sudden had problems with no volume. I actually lost the SpeakerIcon in the tray. I would have to reload my audio drivers every time I rebooted......I even left the audio driver CD in the CDROM. All the sudden, I now have audio volume, but my Icon is still missing and I cannot pull up my audio window that lets me turn on and off certain audio devices..........HELP!

To add a speaker icon on the taskbar, choose "Start" - "Settings" - "Control Panel". From here, choose "Sounds and Multimedia". When the "Sounds and Multimedia" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, choose the "Sounds" tab. Now, check or uncheck the "Show volume control on the taskbar" box as desired, and then press "OK".
