bdewey 0 Posted January 8, 2005 Hello all, I am new to this group, and thank all of you in advance for any help you can offer. My problem is this. I have a laptop that is networked with my company, and it is on a domain (hard-wired). I also have a PC that is not allowed to be connected to the company domain, but I would like to access it with my laptop. I have the PC connected to the network, and am able to use the internet connection, but I cannot see the laptop from the PC, nor can I see the PC from the laptop. Is it possible to configure the system so I can maintain the laptop permissions on the domain, while networking with the PC that is not allowed to connect to the domain. Some extra info: The laptop is running Win2K, and the PC is running WinXP Pro. Both are hard wired. Thanks for any help Share this post Link to post
Jasbo 0 Posted January 8, 2005 in my network at work we also have a mix of pc's that are in the domain and laptops that are not in the domain. Try setting the workgroup name of your pc that is not in the domain to the netbios name of the domain then reboot. After that they should be able to see each other but you still want to be able to share files. e.g. windows 2000 active directory name "w2k.ads.de" the netbios name (or the name with which older clients would use) is "ads" I am assuming that you have no local admin rights on the machine (at least in my domain they don't) so it may not be possible for you to add a user on the domain member. Add a user account with the same credentials as your domain account (user password) on your non domain member (xp) and then share a folder. Make sure you turn off "simple file sharing" on the xp machine which you will find under in windows explorer under "extras, folder options, view" i think. I don't have english windows so I don't know the exact syntax. When you try to access a share on the xp machine it should give you a pop up window asking for username and password and you should use the same account information that you just added. or in a dos window try net use * \\xpmachine\xpshare /user:username password it is imperative that the users have passwords!! i hope this all makes sense Share this post Link to post
