Hi

 

I just upgrade from Win98 to XP-Pro. when I turn the cpu on, it does its usual system checks, then goes to Win XP loading screen, but then it switches over to a blue Win XP screen that reads:

 

Checking file system on C:

The type of the file system is FAT32.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.

You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.

Windows will now check the disk.

Volume Serial number is 07D0-0505

Windows is verifying files and folders...

 

it goes to about 86% then message \windows\system32\dll cache\shimgvw.dll of name (null). plus other similar file.

After a while it completes its check then gets suck at 37% again

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD.

2. Make sure you boot from CD (possibly select the option for this via your BIOS setup (by pressing the appropriate key (e.g. F2,F12,DEL) when starting up your computer, then selecting in the

setup screen that you start first from CD (and then from harddisk or floppy).

3. You get then in the welcome screen.

4. Press 'R' for repair. 'To repair a Windows XP installation ...'

5. Then press '1', then give Administrator password and press Enter, if it is blank, just press Enter.

7. You will get to command prompt, type "chkdsk /p /r" without quotes.

 

Chkdsk will now check your harddrive for bad sectors and other disk/file system errors.

I was able to use fdisk and reformat the hard drive, the bios is set to boot from the cd first. When i reboot i get error message - "Invalid system disk replace the disk and press any key"

Double check whether the BIOS really is set to boot from CD, it sounds as though it's trying to boot from the hard drive.

If the BIOS is set correctly, it looks as though your CD is fubar'ed.
