Installing Civ II on an XP machine

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am trying to install that old warhorse Civ II on my machine, but I am struggling. I am unable to get any further than typing the run command on the setup.exe file on the disc. Nothing then happens. Is this normal ? Does anyone know of anything that might help ?

I am running an XP machine, but otherwise all is standard as far as I am aware. I have tried using the incompatibility wizard but nothing happens. Is XP not suitable for programs from 1995 written for Win 3.1 or does it sound like I have a system issue ?

I'm stumped myself.

Civ 2 works fine in XP. Only issue I've had is that I need to install an updated Indeo codec. The game installs fine.

Sounds to me like you may have a corrupted copy or installshield is messed up.

Try copying the game to your hard drive and installing from there.

What happens when you run setup? Nothing?

Hi,

Sorry for any delay in responding, I've been out of town. In answer to the final question; yes, absolutely nothing happens when I try and run the setup file. This is what is confusing, no error messages or anything to work with, just nothing.

I'm off to try and copy the files to my hard drive and will see what that brings.

Many thanks

Why are you "typing the run command"? Just navigate to the root of the install cd in explorer and doubleclick on the setup file. Worked fine for me, just ok all the options for installing Indeo etc... game runs like a train on a new machine whee smile

Hope you have some luck with it

Ronan

The reason I am typing the run command, is that double clicking on any of the application files does absolutely nothing. This is why I am stumped as to what is wrong - as said above, if there was an error message or breakdown part way through i could understand it. I don't believe that there is a problem with the disc (though I could be wrong), that is why I think it is related to XP - though that might just be temptation to blame the empire of Microsoft.

I take it from the replies I have had that other people can get this to work on XP - is your version an original, that is, does it make reference to win 3.1 or is it newer ?

I copied the game fine to my hard drive, but the setup file wouldn't run from there either - I am finding it a bit mysterious and certainly outside my skillset to resolve !! :x ;( :x

My ver is Civ 2 straight from the CD.

When you run setup, hit ctrl+alt+del and see if the setup process is hanging.

Hmmm, if it is hanging then check for an NTVDM process, end the NTVDM process and see if setup continues.
