pc shuts off unexpectantly....

Recommended Posts

My pc reboots at random times of the day/usage. I suspect that my processor temp is rising beyond the bios max temp setting. However, I am recieving nothing in the event logs (not even "previous shutodwn unexpected").

I am using an Epox KP6-BS motherboard, award bios 9-15-2000, celeron 550 processor (single), 768mb ram. The system has been stable for 3-4 years with no problems.

The motherboard is not overclocked. I have cleaned/dusted/vacummed all the fans, motherboard, case, cables, etc, All components are securely mounted in their slots. UPS is functioning perfectly, no spikes or surges when it happens. Hibernate mode is disabled in bios. Power settings are disabled as well. The power switch is not being hit accidently.

Anyone have any idea what may be causing the pc to shut off?

Does anyone know where I can get a utility to monitor the motherboard stats for an Epox KP6-BS motherboard for Windows 2000 pro? Or any other utility? or tell me how W2k can monitor this (if possible)

TIA

Ice

While your motherboard is probably getting long in the tooth and the processor is old, these are generally that last things to wear out. You can go to www.majorgeeks.com and browse through their diagnostic tools and system tools and find a temperature monitoring tool. Generally, though, as a rule of thumb two other components should be looked at first - memory and video cards. Heat and age usually degrade these before motherboards fail. At the same site you can diagnostic tools to run some tests on them.
