Is it normal for the HD to run for over a minute at reaching desktop in Win2k SP

Have Win2k pro on my P3 1ghz laptop with 512 megs ram. I dont have that many programs loading up but after i get to desktop it seems to take a long time before I can start doing things smoothly.

You may have a lot of programs loaded at startup. Look at Registry in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to see whats loaded and in Start, Programs, Startup

Defrag your hard drives.

Scan for viruses and spy/adware.

Also, look in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

or just load up StartUp Control Panel and stop hunting around in the registry.

Or run msconfig.

 

But, I prefer going through the registry. I'm a lot more comfortable there.
