Wilhelmus 1 Posted April 8, 2005 Can you access safe mode? (Press F8 before the text "windows is starting up" or the windows logo shows up) If you can then, do this: How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;192926 Share this post Link to post

m_phoenix83 0 Posted April 12, 2005 Hey asdf12345. I had the same problem last week, very annoying, isn't it!? Anyway, all i did was re-install my operating system. Took about half hour and my problem was solved. No need to format your drive before hand either, just install win98 again over your old setup. All your personal files (My documents etc...) will still be in place. Let me know how you get on! Phoenix. Good luck. Share this post Link to post

Restart the machine, then as soon as Windows starts loading, press F8. Choose "Safe Mode" from the menu that appears. I would be wary about reinstalling Windows over itself - it may work, but you'll lose any installed applications. Rgds AndyF Share this post Link to post
theefool 0 Posted April 12, 2005 Actually, you can "overlay" win98 on top of win98 with no loss of data. I do it all the time at work, upgrading win98 to win98SE. Usually, I do SFC first, then I try an overlay. Then reinstall (if needed) any windows updates. Though, I highly recommend uninstalling any antivirus programs with the names of Norton or Mcafee. These seem to not like getting "overlayed". Avast! doesn't seem to care/mind. Share this post Link to post
Charjol 0 Posted April 12, 2005 Before you do a full reinstall, here's two things you should try. Start up in command prompt only mode and run scandisk in case there is a file system problem. If this doesn't work, again at the command prompt try SCANREG /restore and try to restore a backup copy of the registry. Share this post Link to post
