Shutdown DNS server on DC

Recommended Posts

Is it OK to stop the DNS Server (or even uninstall it) on a domain controller?

This is not the only one domain controller, there are some more DC's in that domain.

It is OK to shut down the service IF-

Your network has another DNS server acting as a primary or secondary server.

The other DNS servers are advertised to your clients

If you do not verify this you will not have IP to Name resolutions.

While you can point the TCP/IP properties of the DC to access a DNS server on another server on the network, I suggest leaving it local. I am assuming that you mean an Active Directory domain.

The reason that I say this is for availabillity. As a general rule, every one of your DC's should also be DNS servers for themselves and for all of the clients that authenticate against them. This way if they are cut off from the other DC's, they will still be able to authenticate and regsiter the computers that come to them.

DNS really uses almost no resources on the server so it does no harm to leave it running and active. Why remove it?
