Paine 0 Posted May 14, 2005 PLEASE HELP ME! I bought a brand new hp a101w-b strictly to play all of my favorite computer games. I set it up and started installing all of my games, and when I went to play them none of them worked! I called hp, and they couldn't figure it out. They say nothing is wrong with my computer. I have Windows XP Home Edition, and I think that's why it won't work. I have already tried switching the 3D Sound and that didn't work. None of the Might and Magic: 6, 7, 8; will work! Is there anyway I can fix this problem without downloading Windows 98, and then switching back to XP? ;( Share this post Link to post
Paine 0 Posted May 14, 2005 I have direct X 9.0 and when I go to install the game it says directx minimum requirement 7.0, unknown version of dirextx detected and it fails. It did this on my other XP's and they still worked. The problem is when I go to play the game a message pops up and says microsoft has detected a problem and must close......send error reoport, or don't. I have also went to the properties under the shortcut icon and change the compatibility to 98/ME and 95, but still no luck? DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS, IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE! Paine 0 Posted May 18, 2005 I bought a new computer just so I could play all my might and magic games. None of them will play except MM9. I tried some of the suggestion previously left. I was unable to complete any of the downloads for various reasons. When I click on the game to play the message is: C:\progra~1\mighta~1\mss32.dll:pager initialisation error 2. The system cannot find the file specified. I can't find anyone who can help me, even called techinical support. If I bought another computer I won't know if it is compatible or not. I have to be missing something as it's a new puter! Someone has to know something. Please be very specific in what I need to do as I'm not real computer literature. I will forever be indebted to whoever can get me back to playing! Share this post Link to post
Wilhelmus 1 Posted May 19, 2005 Download "The Miles Sound Tools" from http://www.radgametools.com/mssdown.htm. Install it. Go to folder where you installed it ("C:\Program Files\Miles Sound Tools"). Select mss32.dll file and copy it to your might and magic installation folder ("C:\Program Files\Might and magic"). Share this post Link to post
Paine 0 Posted May 19, 2005 I have tried going to Celestial Heavans and still I am getting no results. I download/follow the instructions given and when I get to the part where I play it says, " Some files are missing, please reinstall." I reinstalled and it says the same thing. I then tried the Miles Sound Tools and that's not working either. It won't let me copy mss32.dll into the installation folder and the same message keeps popping up. Please help, it's summer and I want to start my gamming! Share this post Link to post

What folders does your CD(s) have? See if there is game data files uncompressed and try to copy them manually to installation folder. Make sure that they are not marked as read-only. Paine 0 Posted May 28, 2005 It still pops up saying C:\progra~1\mighta~1\mss32.dll pager initialisation error 2, Even though I have the Miles Sound Tool Installed. My Hero's of Might and Magic works fine, and Age of Empires too! It's just Might and Magic that won't work. I tried switching the Compatibility on the Icon, and I have Direct X. I can't get it to work. Share this post Link to post
Wilhelmus 1 Posted May 28, 2005 Try reinstalling it to shorter path and do not use spaces on it, like "C:\Magic6\". Then download this: ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/pack/dshrnk16.zip Unzip it. And execute deshrink.exe. In to "Filename (Input)", select the mss32.dll from the folder you installed the game ("C:\Magic6"). Select DLLs, from the Files of type box. Then onto "Filename (output)", save the file as mss32. Check "unpack Shrinker 3.4". Click Decompress. Now goto to magic installation folder and rename the orginal mss32.dll to mss32.dll.bak and the mss32.(no extension) file to mss32.dll. Then, if this works but the game does not start (different error message), click Start->Run. Type "dxdiag". Goto Sound tab, drag the "Hardware Sound Acceleration level to far left, "No accleration". macweasel 0 Posted June 1, 2005 Actually folks, why not just install MS Virtual PC 2004 and run an old Windows OS on it? Most, if not all of the fixes on TELP as well as CH doesn't work right anymore after the DX patches. Share this post Link to post

I have a similar error message with a different program when I run it in a limited user account. The program run fine in the administer account. It is an older program that was not designed for an OS with different user access. Try running the program in an administer account or in the limited account right click the executable and select Run As. Share this post Link to post

na12229 0 Posted July 16, 2005 There's a patch you need to install to run the exe( and replaces the exe icon ) of might and magic. I did it on mine about a year ago, after spending hours of fooling around thinking in my settings. My computer was also new. I can't remember where I got the patch but it shouldn't ne hard to find. na12229 0 Posted July 16, 2005 try this http://spacetarget.com/games/pc_legends_...-CD/Fixed%20EXE and I think this is the patch to download. Use the new icon created to run the game. Let me know whether or not this works. Share this post Link to post
mrbeetee 0 Posted December 1, 2005 I can confirm, as a M&M fan that the ONLY way to run editions 6 to 8 is with Windows98. I know how you all feel. What i have done is partition my hard drive and loaded Win98 on the first partition and WinXP on the second. If you load your games (or any that require Win98) on the Win 98 partition you can then run them through WinXP. Hope this helps. mrbeetee Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted December 1, 2005 Odd, MM6-7-8 run fine for me under 2000/XP/2003. Always have. MM6 has never given me any problems MM7 v1.1 Windows 2000 Set video to "Hardware Accelerated 3D". Set audio to "Disable Accelerated 3D Audio" (Haven't bothered to try an updated mss32.dll yet, also remember that you need to use the same "family" of bink version. For instance if a game uses v1.x of mss32.dll then you'll need to use a v1.x dll....you cannot use a v7.x dll".) Run MM7.exe in Windows 95 Compatibility mode. Game works. Windows XP Run the game in Windows 95 Compatibility Mode. MM8 v1.0 Windows 2000 Instructions the same as MM7 except disable all sound acceleration in DXDIAG. Windows XP Run the game in Windows 95 Compatibility mode. Share this post Link to post
