Lands of Lore 2 movie playback issues

Recommended Posts

I have been able to run Lands of Lore 2 on Windows XP. However, I've run into problems with movie playback. All cutscenes initially play correctly until reaching the dragon at the end of the Draracle's museum. At that point the fmv becomes extremely choppy, causing both the video and sound to skip. Does anyone know what may be causing this and/or how to fix it?

Here are the ideas I've had and discounted so far:

1: Bad disc. I considered this right away, but all the videos other than the dragon cutscene on disc 1 play correctly, and the problems continue onto disc 2. Speaking stone cutscenes play correctly regardless of which disc is in the drive.

2: DirectX acceleration. Regardless of whether acceleration is turned lowered or turned off for both video and audio, the problem remains.

3: Win95 compatibility mode. One of the few references I found to LoL2 on this site suggested using Win95 mode, but this doesn't seem to make any difference--the severe skipping occurs regardless. Increasing the swap size prevented crashes that I initially encountered, but it had no effect on the fmv problems.

4: Updated my audio and video drivers. This also had no effect whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Compaq Presario

2.4 Ghz on WinXP Home Edition

1024 MB RAM

I have Lands of Lore 2 also and experienced the same problem with choppy cutscenes. I was able to smoothly view some of the cutscenes from the CDs with this alternative program though:

This program allowed me to view various cutscenes on all four CDs without choppiness, but some cutscenes were either partially or fully inaccessible with this program and I continue my search for a better solution.

Please let me know if it works for you. It seems to work with most Westwood games.

Thanks,

Jeff
