justoncemoreplz 0 Posted July 3, 2005 Hello everyone, been looking through the boards, lots of good info and smart ppl. I searched around but i couldn't find a post where ne one mentions a good strategy for installing windows xp. i have two 160gb SATA drives in RaidO and one 120gb IDE drive. wondering what would be best setup (performance, cleaning, and stability wise). Example: windows xp in seperate partition on SATA drives paging file in seperate partition on SATA (needed?) Most used programs/games in seperate partition on SATA long term storage, rarely accessed stuff on IDE ne ideas, suggestions, explanations, wutever, would be mighty helpful. thanx in advance. Exxccessive 0 Posted July 3, 2005 Put windows xp, Most used programs/games, in the same partition on SATA drives. then your important downloads i.e. MP3s, utility Installers, saved files or documents etc. in a seperate partition on SATA. Why? If your windows and your most used programs is on the same partition accessing and communicating between windows and programs will be faster. Why put your important downloads i.e. MP3s, utility Installers, saved files or documents etc. in a different partition? If Windows crashes, fails or some sort of Alien invasion occurs, since your important documents is on a different partition reformatting your primary partition will not be a hard decision. i hope i was able to answer your question But don't rely on just 1 suggestion Search for more If you find a better alternative please share it here. thanx Share this post Link to post
MUff!N 0 Posted July 3, 2005 This is how I laid it out on my HD... 1. C:\Drive Primary (Leading edge of HD, Fastest Part) XP Operating Systems Partition + Pagefiling & Security Software (About 10gbs leaves room for windows updates) 2. G:\Drive (middle of HD) Logical for Software Applications, MP3s, Games, ect. 3. F:\Drive Full Image Backups (back of HD, Slowest part) for the first two Partitions...(A must in my opinion. You can do a complete reistall of everything OS included, within 10mins if everything for whatever reason, crashes and burns! For example: a "Bad" virus, and or Trojan(s) gets into Partition C...you can reinstall your image backup and be cleaned up in mins with everything intact!!!) MUff!N Share this post Link to post
justoncemoreplz 0 Posted July 4, 2005 thanx for the ideas... for muffin: so ur saying put your #1 and #2 partitions on the RAID0 setup and #3 (Backup) on the IDE? How would that work if my IDE is 120GB and my RAID0 will be 320GB? have read about backup programs, but don't know much about how they work cuz never used'em. i do like the setup though. if i formated/reinstalled the C:\ w/ the OS on it, would previously installed games/programs still function right?
