Blue screen error on shutdown

Hi there.

I just set up my system (PIII-450, 256Mb, TNT2U, SBLive) as a dual boot with Win98SE and Win2000 (build 2195).

 

The problem is with shutting down Win2000.

Now, I installed the updated TNT2 drivers (3.76) but all the other drivers are the Win2000 ones.

Other software I installed includes PowerDVD, Winamp etc - nothing too unusual.

 

The problem is....

Every time I go to shut the system down (not restart, which works fine) I get a blue screen with an error:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

This is accompanied by the usual "if this is the first time you have seen this error...." blurb.

 

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

The system seems to perfiorm fine when running and it reboots fine.

Note that Win98 works fine also, but that also tends to hang on the Shutdown screen now and again...but that is a bit of a feature of SE...(:

 

Any and all help on this will be most appreciated.

Try the following:

- Disable APM (adv.power management) - display settings-> screensaver-> power

 

- Disable APM in your BIOS as well, there is a whole section dedicated to APM. Disable everything...

 

As a conclusion your system should shutdown fine, but you will need to manually power off (you might have an "instant-off" option in the BIOS).

Note that monitor/hdd shutdown is still available even after you've done the steps above...just enable the timer from the "power" tab...

Hi there.

Now you mention it, the problem did start when I enabled APM in Win2000 (I never changed the BIOS settings for APM).

Before I enabled it I was shutting the system down and it would just get to the "It is now safe to power off" screen,.

So I enabled APM to try t get it to power off altogether.

I'm at work right now so I'll let you know later today how I got on....

Ok I disabled APM in the Control Panel, rebooted and now when I power the system off I get to the "safe to power off your PC" message...no blue screen error.

 

So am I stuck with this?

Like, do I have a Windows problem here or a hardware (BIOS) problem with APM?

Any ideas?

Yes, you have an "old computer" problem. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing at all. I have this same "problem" on my computer at work. As in, there is no problem.

I did however post a response to your original thread where you claim to "explain" all of these spam-like posts you have made in the last few hours. Try to focus on the issue at hand Alec and please don't try to change the subject when I point out that you have literally posted the same pointless piece of text over and over again. Again am I missing something here? Does AlecStaar == APK? If so that would certainly explain your seemingly insane responses to my legitimate criticisms.

 

Also again for the record I'd like to point out that my presence here has nothing at all to do with Arstechnica. In my quoted "story" above you'll see that I mention a site called OSY and nothing more. Claiming that I am a member of an elite group of persecuters from arstechnica seems rather bold considering that I have no links whatsoever to that site since I was banned from that board over 6 months ago.

 

Will you please provide some detail to these allegations? Also why is this being dragged out on a public forum that has nothing to do with either OSY or Arstechnica? It seems rather silly, doesn't it?
