Win XP SP2 - no sound card detected

On this computer I have a sound card which is built into the motherboard.

When I had win XP home edition the sound card worked,

When I had win XP Pro edition the sound card worked,

But now I have win XP pro SP2 edition and windows says I have no sound card.

According to the windows help thing there are 2 reason why this is.

A) It's been disabled through the Bios.

It's not compatible with windows.

 

I've checked the Bios and yep it's definetly activated so does this mean that my sound card is worthless under win XP SP2?

If so then I think that's just parthetic!!! It's compatible with all the other version os windows XP but not SP2, that really is crap!!!!!!

 

Is this true or is there another way to get my sound card working which windows did mot mention?

Do you find any yellow exclamation marks by sound in device manager?

 

While in device manager go to the top of the window and select View > Show hidden devices and see if you have any yellow exclamation marks by any hidden devices.

You can also go to your mobo manufacturer's website and download new audio drivers for your mobo, I had a similar prob on a SOYO board, new audio drivers fixed it right up.

That site says your board uses the Realtek ALC650E Audio AC'97 CODEC which means you can use these drivers and a new version was just released.

Ok, I've downloaded the drivers but before I run the update I just want to make sure of this because I've had many problems in the past and when people say how to fix them it just makes things worse.

 

So here is the whole story.

 

On Windows XP pro SP2 - it doesn't display my sound card and says there is no sound card on this computer at all but windows has the standard sound drivers installed.

My sound card is built into the motherboard and is definetly activated, so according to windows help system the only reason why it cant detect my sound card is if it's not compatible with windows, but you all say that with these new drivers windows will be able to recognise my sound card and I will be able to hear again?

 

Correct?

I have onboard audio myself, so no sound card is displayed on my system, just the drivers. Update your drivers, that's the most likely culprit, if they don't fix it, it can't make it any worse. If you're still not sure, just create a restore point before installing the new drivers, if anything screws up, just restore your system

Basically it was like gambling by throwing dice and hopeing for a possitive outcome.

But just one thing, My sound card worked without any updates on all other Windows XP OS, so why on WinXP SP2 did I need to upgrade?

I thought that all WIn XP os would be compaible with the same stuff, oh well that's Microsoft for you.

Glad you got your sound back, cool stuff.

 

SP2 does a lot of things to different systems, there's a ton of updates in it that cause conflicts with old drivers. If I format my HDD, I now install SP2, then update my drivers, keeps my system from getting all messed up.

 

When I've updated to SP2 after everything else was installed, I've had all kinds of problems. Seems SP2 just wants a clean system to start with, then everything works fine.

It may be that your old drivers were not WHQL certified for SP2 so XP would not load them.

 

Keep that URL to those drivers as they are updated all the time to fix bugs or add enhancements.

i've just done a fresh install with a sp2 xp pro disc and now some devices aren't working...

 

i have the same problem as above, and i've already uninstalled and reinstalled the new drivers but i still nothing but i high pitch whine... no sound...

 

i checked the devices panel and the card is there, and enabled. when i check all the drivers they are fine, no incompatibilites with irq's...

 

but when i try to initialize the onboard sound a message appears saying that i haven't installed a mixer...

 

im really confused... the mixer is installed with the sound card and its in the devices and it's working properly... but why isnt the sound being routed to the card?!?!?!?

 

arg... i've been doing about 2 days research on this and i'm baffled...

 

i've only just flashed my bios.. and its up to date...

 

what am i missing!!! x)

This may help, or at least add some petrol to the fire

 

I have a Realtek AC97 soundchip. Windows XP SP2 persists in detecting it as a C-Media chip and promptly loads it's own beloved drivers that produce the sort of symptoms you report and of course no sound. It doesn't show up as a device manager flag because windows is convinced it's found the best driver for the job.

 

Copy the realtec drivers to the hard drive and install them via the supplied package, install new driver manually choosing the realtec option and you should be fine unless you stray back to windows update again

thanx for the idea... and i tried that one...

 

i have install the latest drivers from Realtek.com... version A3.77...

 

but still no sound...

 

this is the warning i get when i try to open volume control...

 

"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close."

 

is there some way i can select the mixer manually???

hey again...

 

i just found this nifty little program mentioned in another post [its called DRIVER CLEANER PRO] to strip the drivers files from the windows xp/sp1/sp2 cabinets...

 

i strip the ac'97 drivers out of my cab's in safe mode...

then rebooted...

installed the new drivers....

 

and....

 

 

STILL NO SOUND!!!!!!!

ARRRRRR!!!!!! ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;( ;(

 

is there anything else i could try.. i sent an email to the guys in tiwain the ac'97 people... no response yet...

i have had the same problem no sound card

tried drivers (didn't work)

disabled onboard sound and tried pci sound card (still no sound card)

i have 2 effin sound cards now and i cant get sound

sorry about that let me update a bit

ive been running xp home all the time no updates unless windows auto

i have a elitegroup extreme kv2 mb with amd 30000+

win xp home sp2

2 gb ram

xfx nvidia gf6800gt 256 mb agp

and no sound

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services.

Locate service called 'Windows Audio' and make sure that it is running. If not, doubleclick it and select Automatic from startup type box. Then reboot.
