IRQ's in Win2k f

I have 2 NIC (same make & model)cards installed in a dual boot machine (Win98 & 2KP), it serves my other system. The IRQ's for the 2 NICs are different in 98, 11 & 9. But in 2K they are the same 9 & 9. When I use ICS in 98 it works like a charm. In 2K it drops service after heavy network traffic. I assume that its a problem with the IRQ's, b/c if i disable the card that hooks to my client to the server works just fine.

 

I have tried to modify the settings in the device manager and it does not offer me the option. I disabled PNP OS on my mother board and configured the IRQ's manualy and it didnt reconfigure when I booted 2K, however it worked in 98.

 

Any ideas?

I assume that your computer has configured itself to use ACPI. In this mode, many devices share the same IRQ - usually 9. WHat happens is that the system automatically reallocates resources to the various cards as and when they need them.

 

Apparently the idea behind this is to free up as many resources as possible to ensure that legacy cards function properally.

 

Your problems are probably due to the drivers for your card. At this time, most drivers for W2K are relatively young, and issues concerning the handling of ACPI may yet to have been ironed out.

BTW - this is also why you can't modify anything manually, the system simply won't lat you.

 

I've heard that if you reinstall win 2k and press F5 when it asks you to press F6 if you want to specify any additional drive controllers, install gives you the option to set up your machine as a standard PC i.e. without ACPI. This is supposed to allow you to allocate resources instead of the system. I haven't tried this, so I cannot confirm whether or not this is actually the case. Apparently, it should also allow your bios to control system resources.

You can also go under device manager, bring up the properties for the computer and update drivers which will give you the same options.

I've got a very similar problem with my pcmcia flashdisks. Whenever I insert my 20MB SanDisk ATA flash card, Win2K can't seem to assign an IRQ to it. Win98 gives the device IRQ5, but Win2K says that IRQ5 is owned by ACPI -- and I can't seem to find any place to change that. Any ideas?
